Andy Hessenthaler believes Gillingham’s improved form is partly down to the former boss.
Hessenthaler worked as assistant to Taylor at the Gills and he was keen to praise the departed manager for laying the foundations for their current success.
“We are going forward,” said Hessenthaler, who has been part of the four-man management team during the last six games.
“We are carrying on the work that the gaffer (Taylor) did. Peter brought me to the football club and I was disappointed to see him leave. He was building something at the football club.
“We have a group of young players and they are now starting to gel together. We may have changed the shape slightly but he brought these players in and these young players are starting to find their feet.”
A decision on who takes over as manager of the Gills permanently is imminent.
Dubai-based chairman Paul Scally is in the country at present, staying with the team as they enjoy several days away, in between games at Bristol City and Walsall.
Mr Scally has previously ruled out the four-man team continuing at the helm and they have also denied being interested.
But with progressive performances and improved results the management committee have impressed many during the interim.
Hessenthaler was asked after the Bristol City game if the group were keen to continue until the end of the season, but he declined to give a firm answer either way.
“We are just doing what we have been asked to do,” he said.
“We are enjoying it and we are four guys who have been associated to the club, on and off, for 20 years.
“People might say four people can’t do it but we have a healthy debate about football. We have the same ideas and we are enjoying what we are doing.
“That is what we will do until the chairman decides what he is going to do.”
On Sunday the Gills face Walsall away, aiming to make it three League 1 wins on the spin.
Hessenthaler added: “It is working at the moment, but we have to forget about anything going on around us and keep working hard with the players on the training ground, so whoever takes over can take over a side in a healthy position.”
