Kevin Horlock will not be rushing into the transfer market after backing his young Chatham players to come good this season.

The new Chats boss re-signed Austin Gacheru last week and the striker played 84 minutes of the 4-1 win over Guernsey.

Horlock, who left Needham Market to succeed Kevin Watson in the Maidstone Road hotseat last month, hasn’t ruled out further additions but he likes the look of what he’s already got.

He said: “If somebody is available that makes us stronger, I would be interested but I’m in no rush. The lads have shown that we’ve got a talented young squad and it would be wrong of me to start tinkering when they’ve done so well.

“I don’t want to go over the top but I’m very pleased with the job I’ve taken on here. I’m very excited by the young lads I’ve got in the squad."

“I thought Austin, who I signed late on Monday night, made a big difference to us, injected a little bit of freshness and experience which helped the younger boys (against Guernsey). I’m looking forward to the future.”

Horlock lives in Gravesend but admits he’s still getting to grips with Kent football.

“I don’t know this level too well,” he said. “I was at Needham, which is obviously a different area, so I don’t know a massive amount of players around here."

Chatham host Hythe in Ryman League Division 1 South on Saturday before making the trip to East Grinstead on Tuesday night.
