Match-winner Regan Charles-Cook praised the hard work of his Gillingham team-mates after leaving Accrington Stanley with maximum points.

The Gills had to graft for the win at the Wham Stadium on Saturday, with Charles-Cook’s 59th-minute goal enough to clinch the victory.

“It felt great to walk away with three points,” he said.

“We worked hard and we had been working hard at it before. I think we should have more points on the board but we have been conceding through little errors.

“We rode our luck a little bit, but a win is a win, it is a hard place to go.”

Gillingham improved in the second half at Accrington after manager Steve Evans had reminded the players of their responsibilities at the interval.

Charles-Cook said: “You know with the gaffer the minimum he expects is to work hard and to leave it all out there on the pitch.

“Supporters come so far to support us and that just gave us the momentum to go out there and work hard for each other.”

Gills keeper Jack Bonham pulled off several impressive saves either side of Charles-Cook’s goal.

It was the type of goal the forwards had been working on.

The goalscorer said: “I love it when I can get on the half turn, to run at defenders and get shots off. We have been practising that one in training, as forwards, so I am happy with the goal.

“Jack Bonham played outstanding to keep us in it. Big applause for him and defensively we also stood our ground and stayed solid. It was good to get on the bus with three points.

“This is the platform for us to push on now, hopefully we can get more points on the board, instead of drawing, it is a bonus to get a clean sheet.”

Charles-Cook hasn’t started many league games, Saturday’s was his fourth of the season, but he’s remained patient.

He said: “I am feeling good and you just have to bide your time sometimes and work hard.

“We are all in this together and whoever is on the pitch we have to support each other and that is the good thing about the squad we have now.

“Hopefully we can push on and get more points on the board.”
