Gillingham director of football Kenny Jackett has spoken about speculation linking the club to Cheltenham striker Alfie May.

May, 29, has been linked with a move to the Gills on numerous occasions and hopes have heightened this summer as the club go in search of a handful of key targets to strengthen their promotion hopes in League 2 this season.

Charlton Athletic and Derby County have both been touted as a potential new club if they are willing to stump up the cash to take him away from Cheltenham.

The Gills might like the striker but aren’t in the race at present, however.

Jackett, speaking on Thursday, said: “We haven't made an offer.

“He is a local lad, that is maybe where the speculation comes from, but he is under contract at Cheltenham and we haven’t made an offer.”

Whether that changes remains to be seen but the striker won’t come cheap and the Gills have already said they are taking a sensible approach to their summer recruitment.

Speculation has been rife regarding the Kent-born striker, who netted 22 goals last season in League 1 for Cheltenham. He’s bagged 58 in the league for them in 125 starts.

Charlton Athletic were reported to have made a bid but a whole host of clubs have been linked, including Gills’ League 2 rivals Wrexham.

He remains under contract at Cheltenham.

Jackett, meanwhile, confirmed on Thursday that the Gills have yet to reach an agreement with left-back David Tutonda, who was offered a new deal at the end of last season.

Jackett said: “We made him an offer. He hasn’t taken it as yet. It is still under offer.

“We do need a left-back, we haven't got one on the books, so we are actively looking for one.

“I can’t say if he will stay or won’t but the left-back positon definitely needs addressing.”

The Gills did also offer midfielder Alex MacDonald a new deal but he chose to join League 1 Stevenage, under Steve Evans.

“We made him what we felt was a good offer,” said the Gills DOF.

“He got an offer from a League 1 club and good luck to him. The second half of the season he did great for us, did really, really well. He deserves his move into League 1.”
