Jayden Clarke’s wait for his Football League debut ended on Saturday after coming on as a late substitute for Gillingham.

The 21-year-old forward joined the Gills from Dulwich Hamlet in January and was introduced off the bench for the Gills at 2-1 down against Bradford City.

More: Magnificent first half should have been enough

Gillingham pushed late on to claim something from the League 2 match and were rewarded with an equalising goal on 97 minutes.

Clarke played a bit-part in the performance and wrote on Twitter of the “amazing feeling” after his late appearance infront of 18,000 fans at Bradford. His only other game for the Gills came in the Kent Cup at Tonbridge - where he scored in a 1-1 draw - and before that his last game for Dulwich was a London County Cup game at Wingate & Finchley infront of 146 people.

The forward scored six times in 26 appearances this season for the Hamlet before his move to Gillingham.

Speaking about his EFL debut, manager Neil Harris said: “The game (at the time) was a little up in the air, a little harum-scarum, there wasn’t a lot of control to the game.

“Jayden has got a long way infront of him in to be a regular first team player, in the sense of understanding with and without the ball, but he has raw attributes.

“Jayden’s strength at the moment is that he has end product.

“He has the potential to unlock a defence or score out of nothing.”
