England hockey have announced no more play until the end of June but it hasn’t stopped the Canterbury juniors.

Club members have been encouraged to post their activities on social media during the coronavirus shutdown, with some creative and inspiring videos produced.

From under-8 player Timothy Lewis taking on ‘The Maze’ challenge in the kitchen, Rory Butcher nailing the ‘Meteor Attack’ in his back garden and the Triggs family who attempted hockey keepy-uppy with a loo roll in the dining room.

The action hasn’t stopped and junior chairman at Canterbury Hockey Club, Doug Young, has enjoyed the way everyone has managed to keep spirits high.

He said: “We have a fantastic junior section at Canterbury hockey club with over 400 children enjoying their hockey.

“With many children missing their pitch time, we took to social media to provide our juniors and their parents with some inspiration to practice and learn all things hockey whilst having some fun along the way.

“We've been super-impressed with the creativity and enthusiasm shown in the videos they've shared with us in return. Hopefully one of them will become the next Canterbury GB Olympian of the future!”

Sevenoaks Junior Hockey Club have been doing something similar, with members taking on challenges that can be done indoors.

On Monday, England Hockey announced the suspension of all hockey activity was being extended until June 30, having initially halted the game until mid-April.

A statement said: “With the continuing social restrictions caused by Covid-19, this extension is pragmatic in the circumstances and provides clarity for our clubs, players, officials and volunteers.

“We have asked that this national position is replicated at a local level by counties, leagues and independent hockey providers.

“It is hugely disappointing to curtail hockey activity in this way and there will be many league and cup competitions which will not now reach their natural conclusion.

“The health and wellbeing of those in the hockey community is our overriding concern so please follow the government guidance and stay safe.”
