Gillingham Football Club’s director of football Kenny Jackett has stepped down from his role.

Jackett joined the Gills as their DoF in January 2023, in a move that also saw Andy Hessenthaler take on the head of recruitment role at the club - a change of club hierarchy that followed the takeover of the club by US businessman Brad Galinson.

Jackett’s decision to stand down is for medical reasons and there’s been no person appointed as his replacement. Hessenthaler and managing director Joe Comper have taken over his duties, working closely with manager Mark Bonner.

On leaving, Jackett said: "I want to thank Brad and Shannon (Galinson) for the last couple of years, I've enjoyed working at Gillingham.

“In Mark, the club has a great guy managing the team, and I'm sure he and the club will do well. I wish everyone the best of luck for the rest of the season."

Owner Brad Galinson said: "Kenny has been a calm and knowledgeable person to have around the club.

“His experience and contacts within the game have been invaluable and whilst we are sad to see him step down, Kenny's health is the most important thing and must be his sole focus.

“I'm grateful for what he has given to the club and I'm sure our fans will respect his and his family's privacy."

Jackett, 62 enjoyed three promotions as manager, at Swansea, Millwall and Wolves, and was tasked with overseeing football-related issues at the Gills, including hiring, firing and recruitment.

He oversaw the key transfer window in January 2023, which ensured the Gills pulled clear of trouble, providing then manager Neil Harris with the players needed to lift the club off the bottom of League 2 and towards mid-table security.

The following season the Gills sacked Harris shortly into their campaign after a dip in form and the club opted for Stephen Clemence as their next appointment. He was dismissed after a mid-table finish, replaced by Mark Bonner.
