It’s been a big year for British sport and Medway athletes have played their part.

In March, Charlotte Evans led Kelly Gallagher to Paralympic gold in Sochi – Great Britain’s first ever Olympic or Paralympic gold medal on snow.

The Chatham skier and her visually impaired partner claimed first place in the super-G downhill.

Then in August, Rachael Burford was a senior figure in the England women’s rugby team that won the World Cup after two previous final defeats.

Burford, who played rugby for Medway in her early years, helped England beat Canada 21-9 in Paris in the final.

Both athletes are leading figures for sport in Medway and are bound to be in the running at this year’s Medway Sports Awards.

Other notable performances this year include Holcombe Hockey Club duo Maddie Hinch and Laura Unsworth, who won a Commonwealth silver medal with the England women’s hockey team and Martin Brockman and Shaunagh Brown, who made the Commonwealth finals of the men’s decathlon and women’s hammer throw respectively in Glasgow.

Medway council’s portfolio holder for community services Cllr Howard Doe said: “These historic achievements are further proof that Medway is a place where athletes can succeed. Wherever their successes take them, we are proud of them and how they represent us on the world stage.”

This year’s gala awards evening will take place on Friday, December 12, at Rochester’s Corn Exchange.

There are a total of 11 categories, including a new award recognising achievements in officiating, umpiring or refereeing.
