The Shouting Men Column with Gillingham captain Lee Martin

I think the break we’ve just had will serve the boys good, as some of them have looked a bit jaded of late.

It’s good for some of those boys who have played x-amount of games to get a rest period.

For myself and Scott Wagstaff, though, it was disappointing not to have a game because we have just come back from niggles and into the team.

It was my first 90 for three weeks at Bury and Waggy played a longer part than he has done for three or four weeks. But while it was disappointing from our point of view, it was good for the team, which is the most important thing.

New date agreed for home match against Rotherham

We lost that game at Bury but how it was on I’m not too sure because the pitch on the far side was still frozen.

We were happy to go on and play – a midweek match up there wouldn’t have been ideal – but you could barely get a stud in there. It was a terrible pitch.

It was disappointing to lose but it wasn’t for the want of trying. We just weren’t at it first 20 and that showed by conceding two poor goals and we couldn’t get back into it.

The bad weather left us struggling to train but we were all asked to do some work at home and report back. We had a good few days off but for me, I would probably have preferred to train.

With the broken schedule, if the Rotherham game was on we wouldn’t have been the best prepped, so it has all worked out rather well in that sense. The boys all came back refreshed.
