Captain Doug Loft may be sidelined again when the Gills visit Barnsley on Saturday.

Loft has an Achilles injury which forced him out of Tuesday’s League 1 game against Swindon.

Gills manager Peter Taylor said: “He is struggling for Saturday but has got a chance for Tuesday (against Newcastle in the League Cup). He just needs anti-inflammatory and antibiotic tablets.”

Taylor has been besieged by injury problems since the start of the season.

Players such as Matt Fish, Jermaine McGlashan and Brennan Dickenson have been in action despite not being 100% ready.

Aaron Morris also missed the Swindon game but his injury – a gluteal muscle strain – wasn’t one which Taylor was prepared to gamble on.

Taylor said: “If he had played it could have made (the injury) a lot worse. I couldn’t take that risk."

Joe Martin (knee) has a slight chance of being involved, while Cody McDonald (ankle) is also getting close.
