Gillingham manager Steve Lovell hopes he gets time to put things right.

The Gills lost at bottom side Plymouth on Tuesday night and have won just one of their last 12 league games.

Victory for their opponents lifted them off the foot of League 1, replaced by Bradford, who visit Priestfield on Saturday.

Lovell doesn’t know how much time he has left but with many of his summer signings coming back from injury, he wants the chance to show what his team can do when they’re fully fit.

“I can’t make decisions on what my future holds, that is down to the chairman and others at the club," said Lovell. "I will just continue what I am trying to do until I am told otherwise.

“It is a horrible situation to be in but it is a challenge I will never duck away from and one I will never walk away from. I will face whatever criticism is chucked at me because I am the manager.

“I am trying my hardest to get us to perform, to please the supporters and the club. It is being let down by certain individuals that gets to me.”

Lovell still feels he has the quality in the squad to get them out of trouble but summer signings Regan Charles-Cook, Brandon Hanlan and Dean Parrett, along with midfielder Billy Bingham, have all been suffering with injuries.

“We need to get them back in as soon as possible,” added Lovell. “The squad is good enough, or course it is, but we need everyone back to full fitness to push froward and hopefully that will come on Saturday, when I have a full quota to pick from.”

It will be down to chairman Paul Scally to decide just how much time Lovell has to turn things around.

Lovell said: “I understand the situation that the chairman is in. I just want the opportunity to work with the team that I brought together in the summer. Hopefully, that will happen but who knows?

“It is not a good run we are on but it is so easily changed. We still have enough quality to get ourselves out of this trouble but we need to have everyone fit and able and willing to fight the battle.”
