Joe Martin was due back in training at the end of the week but he faces competition on his return.

The left-back has missed Gillingham’s last two games with a calf injury.

Last weekend the Gills handed loanee defender Bradley Garmston a debut, after arriving on a month’s loan from West Bromwich Albion.

That means even if fit, Martin still may have to watch from the sidelines when Gillingham host Oldham on Saturday.

Coach Darren Hare said: “It looks like he could be in contention but whether we put him straight back into the team or not we will have to wait and see.

“Joe has done well this season but whether we bring him straight back in or ease him back in, I don’t know.

“He has had a calf injury and it’s something we have had to manage.”

Midfielder Amine Linganzi is also getting close to being fit again, following another hamstring injury. Aaron Morris, however, is still a few weeks away.
