John Egan made the headlines with another goal on Saturday, but helping keep Gillingham’s first clean sheet in 14 games was just as pleasing.

The Irish centre-back lives for clean sheets and Saturday’s was long overdue.

He said: “We have been close to getting a few clean sheets but we just haven’t got them as we have given some sloppy goals away. Now that we have got one it’s good.

“You have to build from the back and if you can keep a lot of clean sheets you are going to do well. It is on our mind every time we step foot on the pitch.

“Now that we have got one, hopefully we can get more.”

Gillingham have now gone five games unbeaten and Egan feels those positive results have been long overdue after the side went nine without a win.

Egan said: “There were a few of those games in that nine-game run where we should have never lost or drawn. Notts County and two or three others slipped away from us where we should have won.

“We always had the belief and that’s the good thing about this squad. We don’t lack confidence to get result."
