Gillingham head west on Saturday to take on a Plymouth Argyle team who ‘dazzled’ in the week.

Weekend opponents Plymouth bounced back from an opening day loss at Rotherham by thumping Championship new boys Peterborough United 4-0 at London Road on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup.

Gillingham's weekend opponents stunned Championship side Peterborough in the week

The shock win was watched by a Gills scout and boss Steve Evans will be wary of what Argyle can produce.

Speaking after Gills’ cup win over Crawley, Evans said: “The person who does our match reports said they were absolutely fantastic, sizzling football he called it.

“From that point of view we know it is going to be tough but we will go down early, prepare properly and this group, the minimum they will do is fight. We could lose but they will fight, but you can also win by fighting.”

The Gills are likely to be heading down with injury doubts surrounding several senior players.

Ryan Jackson and John Akinde are close to shaking off knocks but captain Kyle Dempsey was left out on Tuesday night because of injury. Alex MacDonald and Robbie McKenzie are both expected to miss the trip.

Evans said: “The kids will have to be involved because if we don’t then we will have 12 players instead of 15-16 but I am too experienced to be moaning about it.

“You can either be positive about it and get on with it and be excited by the challenge. What’s the opposite? It is being down and not motivated and if you are not motivated then you are not motivating your troops are you? I have to motivate the troops every day, they are already unique and special. They are a little platoon but we need to be slightly bigger one.

“The chairman is working hard and we have to give him the time to do that. If he comes up with nothing we will have to go as we are.”
