Jason Brown has ruled out making a return on the pitch for the Gills after announcing his retirement.

The 33-year-old was named as Gillingham’s new goalkeeper coach on Monday.

Brown played 137 games for the Gills between 2001 and 2006 but he won’t be adding to that number.

He ended any suggestions of a comeback by announcing his retirement on twitter, shortly after his role at the Gills was confirmed.

Brown said: “(I’m) extremely grateful to the gaffa Justin Edinburgh (for) bringing me back and giving me the opportunity at the club I love.

“As a player I have had some of the best life experiences that people can only dream about.

“I have met some great people who have always supported me, as well as my family, who have always been there for me.

“Since losing my beloved Dad, playing has never felt the same, and now with this fantastic opportunity I announce my retirement from football.”

Brown played for Dartford during the last campaign and was due to turn out for Sutton United next season before the Gillingham job opportunity came up.

Gills boss Justin Edinburgh remains in the hunt for a new goalkeeper, with fans’ favourite Stuart Nelson set to move on to a new club.
