Peter Taylor is back in football management - a month short of his 70th birthday.

The former Gillingham boss - whose last job as manager was at National South Welling United - has taken over at non-league Maldon & Tiptree.

Taylor led the Gills to promotion in 2000 and returned for a second stint in 2013 having managed at Premier League Leicester City, a one-game stint as caretaker of England and spells with Brighton, Hull, Crystal Palace, Stevenage, Wycombe, Bradford and the Bahrain national side.

He managed the Gills for a third time in a caretaker capacity, following Ady Pennock’s departure, having been director of football at Priestfield.

More recently he’s been manager of Dagenham and then Welling United.

He left Dagenham after 18 months at the helm, in December 2019, two points off the relegation places.

Taylor was in charge of Welling for just five months, leaving the club in March this year just four points above the relegation zone in National South.

His early management experience came at Dartford, between 1986 and 1990 and he also had a season at Dover in 1995/96. He takes over a Maldon side sitting third from bottom in the Isthmian League North Division.

Taylor was spotted back at Gills recently, on scouting duties for Northampton Town.
