Gillingham first team coach Steve Lovell insists relegation isn’t something anyone at the club is thinking about.

The Gills are six points above the drop zone heading into the weekend with five games left.

Barring a disaster that should be enough for the Gills to retain their League 1 status for next season, even if they don’t win another game.

But such thoughts aren’t concerning Lovell, who is targeting a winning end to the season.

He said: “We are not even discussing it. We don’t talk about it. We are going out to prepare and win games. We are not going to set up to draw and get a point.

“That’s our philosophy, that is the way we look at it and that’s the way we train. Everything is a positive. We are disappointed to draw 3-3 (on Monday) after being 3-1 up but we prepared to win. We attacked and have good attacking players in the squad.”

Those two points dropped cost the Gills a place in the top half at the end of the Easter weekend and Lovell admitted: “In football anything can happen.

“We are realistic and there are six points in it. The extra two points would have been brilliant.

“We will only do our best and if we can win on Saturday and that’s enough, then so be it. We have 52 and that’s fine but we are not going to lay down and take it that that’s

final."
