Justin Edinburgh was left to reflect on a "strange" Saturday afternoon at Scunthorpe.

Heavy rain forced play to be suspended for half an hour in the first half at Glanford Park, after which the home side held onto their 2-1 advantage to make sure of their League 1 safety, ending Gills' four-match unbeaten run in the process.

Edinburgh said: "It was quite a bizarre first half. We started very well and then we were the instigators of our own downfall in terms of gifting Scunthorpe two goals.

"Obviously we had to depart the pitch, with the deluge of rain coming down and then the game fizzled out.

"We had a lot of possession in the second half without really creating any chances.

"We never like losing any game but in the circumstances, it was a strange old game."

Luke Norris gave Gillingham a second-minute lead but goals from Hakeeb Adelakun and Gary McSheffrey turned the game on its head and left Edinburgh's side empty-handed.

He said: "You always want to start fast and you always want to get the initiative in a game. We did that and we had one or two other chances.

"But as good as our play was, we're bitterly disappointed with the two goals. We've spoken about it and they're things we've got to learn from.

"I'm sure the players that were at fault for the goals will learn from that because they're good characters. They're young boys and they'll learn from those errors."
