Sean Clare is loving Gillingham’s new-found attacking approach.

The Gills have changed tack since Steve Lovell took charge on a caretaker basis.

Players have been given more license to attack.

Clare said: “Everyone enjoys attacking football, fans and players.

“When we are playing at our best it is really enjoyable and getting the ball down, moving it quickly, showing for the ball, it’s good.

“The type of player I am it really suits me, getting the ball down, running at players and playing off players and hopefully we can do a lot more of that.

“We have finally clicked a bit as a team, we have started playing a bit more football, getting it down and playing to our strengths.

“We have started pressing more and forcing teams to give us the ball higher up the pitch, which forces them back and creates more chances for us, we just need to convert more of those chances and we’ll get a lot more wins.”

Clare, on loan from Sheffield Wednesday, has been playing in an unfamiliar role in recent games, covering the right-back position.

He said: “I am trying to attack but a clean sheet is very important as well, there is a fine balance, but I am learning times when I can go and get forward. The more I play there the more comfortable I will get and I can create more.

“I haven’t really played there before, just bits and bobs, but never really full games, especially not at this level, so it has been different. I think I am doing alright there and I the more I learn it the more it will get easier.

“Normally I am an attacking midfielder and it is very different but I was happy to play there. I have never been scared of a tackle in midfield and that’s the same at right-back.

“It might help me if and when I do go back into midfield what the full-backs need. It will broaden my game a lot.”
