There is more to come from the Gills said manager Steve Lovell.

He has turned their form around since taking charge, lifting them clear of the League 1 drop zone.

From his 11 league games, he has overseen five wins and just a couple of defeats.

They are now preparing for the visit of Oxford United on Boxing Day, a team reeling from a 7-0 defeat to Wigan.

“I can’t wait,” who claimed his first home league win last time out, beating Bristol Rovers 4-1.

“These players are a great bunch, a pleasure to work with and we will keep working, we will get better.

“We have taken six points from the last two games, we can’t do much more.

“It’s down to hard work. The boys understand what is required of them and they all do it.”

The wins over Rovers and Fleetwood were sandwiched inbetween the FA Cup defeat to Carlisle.

Lovell said: “No disrespect, but if you are going to lose one of the three games, it would be the FA Cup.

“It would have been lovely to get through, don’t get me wrong, we wanted to win, but if you take the three games and lose one, which would you pick? You would pick that one, so six points from two games, over the week, it has been good.”

Lovell will now be hoping his team keep on their game for the visit of Oxford, learning lessons from that Carlisle loss.

The manager said: “I had the sense in the dressing room (at Carlisle) that we were over confident. We had a win on the Saturday (against Bristol Rovers) and were then going out and thinking it would be easy.

“They have learnt from that. I always try and take a positive from a negative. Now the players understand what is required.

“They can play football, we get it down, we pass it, we knock it long when we have to, we had two goals disallowed as well (at Fleetwood), they were offside, but it shows how many chances we are creating.”
