Jake Hessenthaler could be utilised as a defender more often.

The 20-year-old was handed the right wing-back role for the Gills against Leyton Orient on Saturday.

It’s a position boss Peter Taylor feels suits Hessenthaler.

Taylor said: “I actually think he passes the ball forward better in that position than he does in midfield. Nobody really beats him defensively so I think he has done very well.

“The last time we played Orient he went to right-back and he played Crawley away there and he handled it really well.”

Hessenthaler usually adopts the midfield role.

Taylor added: “He is a good lad and he wants to play. If it means it’s that or not playing, he will play. To me, he is comfortable there.”
