The Shouting Men with Gillingham defender Leon Legge

We are enjoying the new style of football and it’s helped take the pressure off us defenders.

When you defend like we were doing for long periods, something has to give.

In our squad we have a lot of attacking players, like Cody McDonald, Bradley Dack and Doug Loft, but we do need to focus on what we do defensively and we’ve been doing that.

We’ve been working on getting in the right positions to stop goals being leaked.

We have had a few games, like at MK Dons last season, where we defended for the majority of the match and still won but you can’t do that every time.

The better teams are good on the ball, will move it around and you will end up running out of steam.

We’ve been going after teams, which was the call from the fans – that’s what they wanted.

When you are pressing high it does give the defence a bit of a breather. The way we are attacking and moving the ball and getting it higher suits us.

We haven’t had too much time to work on it, but I feel once we get everyone together and work on it properly results will come.

We were unlucky not to get anything from last week’s game at Crewe. We conceded the first goal from a penalty and I couldn’t believe the referee pointed to the spot.

For their third, their player handled it but he could have played basketball with it and I think the ref would have played on.
