Riders were greeted by testing conditions during the opening round of the Wigmore CC evening 10-mile time trial.

Wednesday’s north-easterly winds and an air temperature of just seven degrees were certainly not conditions conducive for fast cycling - it also meant that a smaller field than would be expected attended the Iwade event.

Using the Q10/20 course at Iwade, that comprises of five two-mile laps that incorporate the old Sheppey Way and Old Ferry Road, riders had to endure a nagging 16mph wind.

Thirteen riders took the start and overall victory went to Cliff Cunningham, riding for the 4T Velo road club, with a time of 24.52. Cliff has ridden that course nearly two minutes quicker, but with such difficult conditions to endure, will be pleased with his effort.

Second place went to Phil Appleby of the host club Wigmore CC in 25.02. Third place went to Matt Nunn of the Medway Velo Club in a time of 26.12. Kate Savage of Wigmore CC was the fastest lady home in a time of 28.23.

First junior home was Frankie Finch, in 31.41, also riding for Wigmore CC.
