Victory was more important than the goals for Gillingham striker Luke Norris.

The frontman scored twice in the second half to help the Gills bag their first maximum-point haul on the road this season.

He netted the first goal from close-range and rifled home a second from distance.

“It was good to score but the main thing is that we have finally won away, which has been a long time coming,” said Norris.

“It was credit to the boys, they worked really hard and the fans were really good. That is what they deserved for travelling all of the country for us. It was good to get those three points away from home.”

The Gills were kept in the game during a difficult first half by keeper Stuart Nelson.

And Norris was quick to praise the Gills no.1.

“Nelson has done really well for us,” said the striker.

“He is one of the top keepers in this division and seeing him day in, day out, he is unbelievable.

“He did his bit as did everyone else.”

Gills boss Peter Taylor described Norris’ first goal as a “striker’s finish,” as he tucked the ball away from close-range.

And the goalscorer said: “He (the manager) has wanted me to do a bit more of that. It is nice to score those sort of goals, it might not be the nicest to look at, but they feel good those ones.”

His second was a belter.

“It was really what I have been told to do,” he said. “If I get a sight of goal, just whack it, and this time it went in so it was really nice.”
