Gillingham are two steps away from a Wembley final.

And boss Peter Taylor will be hoping that helps fire his side up this weekend.

The Gills face Leyton Orient at Priestfield on Saturday in the area semi-final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. The winners face a two-legged area final. The winner of that plays for the trophy at Wembley.

“It is a great opportunity and I want the performance to show that,” said the Gills manager, who has seen his side win three times away from home to reach this stage.

“All clubs of our size can do with help financially. If it means you could possibly get to Wembley, that would be fantastic for the finances but we know we have one big game before getting to a two-legged final and that would also be good financially for the club. Then who knows?”

Gillingham were 1-0 down at half-time in their last Trophy game, against Crawley.

Taylor used the lure of Wembley as a motivational tool on that night and the Gills responded with two second-half goals to win 2-1.

Taylor said: “I asked how many had played (at Wembley) and it was just Jermaine McGlashan and Leon Legge who said they had. They were the only two. It is a possibility."
