Among the many permutations towards the foot of Ryman League Division 1 North, Chatham boss Kevin Watson is keeping it simple.

Victory at home to Cheshunt on Saturday could take Chats six places and eight points clear of the relegation zone. But defeat could leave them just two points above the bottom three if results elsewhere go against them.

Watson said: “It’s still a concern. By no stretch of the imagination are we out of it and both games coming up are against teams down there with us (Chatham go to third-bottom Romford on March 7), so the ‘six-pointer’ factor comes into it.

“I know it’s a cliche but we just need to take each game as it comes. We need to focus on Saturday, not look beyond that, and then see where we are.

“Other teams’ results will change and the league table will change but we know what we’ve got to do."

Cheshunt are level on points with Chatham, with a slightly inferior goal difference but boasting a game in hand.

Watson said: “They’ll go into it with the same mentality as us. It’s a chance for us to stamp our mark on things, we’re at home and we need to focus on ourselves. I’ll be stressing to the players how important that is.”

Chatham, who have lost just one of their last five home games, are missing Lewis Knight through suspension.
