Gillingham’s win at Scunthorpe was even more impressive than when they ended Portsmouth’s unbeaten start to the season.
The Gills won 2-0 at Fratton Park in October to halt Pompey’s 11-game unbeaten start to the League 1 campaign.
But boss Steve Lovell insisted that Saturday’s win by the same scoreline at Glanford Park was the best so far.
“As an overall performance, it was our best of the season,” said Lovell.
“The way we won the game, it could have been four, five or six in the end.
“Portsmouth was a heck of a win because of the situation they were in, they hadn’t lost all season, and the situation we were in (at the time). They were both good wins but for different reasons.
“That was more of a smash and grab down at Portsmouth and we held on, while this one we were in control throughout the 90 minutes and looked like we could go on and score whenever we wanted.”
It sets Gills up nicely for a busy festive period ahead, with five more games to play before New Year’s Day.
Next up is Wycombe at Priestfield on Saturday and Lovell hopes it will give them the impetus to pick up another three points.
“It’s a good win at the start of a lot of games coming up now,” he said. “It gives us a good week to prepare for the home game next week.
“Every point is important. There’s a lot of games coming up now over the Christmas period.”
