Gillingham have a much-needed local game to look forward to next season.

Former Gillingham title-winner Myles Weston and their ex-youth player Jude Arthurs played their part for South London side Bromley in their National League promotion final win on Sunday.

Both players started Sunday’s final against Solihull Moors at Wembley, with the two teams playing for a place in the Football League.

Bromley were twice pegged back after leading, as the game ended 2-2, but a penalty shootout win means they will now play in the Football League for the first time, which will include a trip to Priestfield.

In a division which is dominated by northern teams next season, including treks to Barrow and relegated Carlisle, having a rival nearby - a mere 30 miles - will be a welcome addition to the fixtures for Gillingham.

The Gills last met Bromley in a first-team fixture when they played in an FA Cup tie back in November 2006. The Gills won 4-1 at Priestfield thanks to goals from Mark Bentley (2) and Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu (2).

Bromley are managed by Andy Woodman - a man who has previously been approached to manage the Gills and has been tipped to take over from Stephen Clemence.

Woodman’s team finished third in the National League, behind Barnet - who lost 4-0 to Solihull in the play-off semi-finals - and promoted Chesterfield.

Former Gills winger Weston scored twice for Bromley in their 3-1 semi-final win over Altrincham, where Arthurs was also on the scoresheet.

Weston, now 36, spent two seasons at the Gills between 2012 and 2014, his first year helping guide the club to their League 2 title success under Martin Allen. He made 77 league appearances in his time at Priestfield.

Midfielder Arthurs, meanwhile, was with the Gills from eight until the age of 18 when he was released, moving to the Ravens, initially playing for their under-23 team before moving into the first team.

Arthurs scored one of the penalties for Bromley on Sunday as they overcame the Moors 4-3 on penalties.
