Justin Edinburgh reaction following Gillingham's 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion under-21s

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh got plenty out of Tuesday night’s game against West Brom's youngsters.

Defeats in their opening two games for both teams meant the Checkatrade Trophy match at The Hawthorns was a dead-rubber but at least Edinburgh was able to bring a couple of injured players back into action.

And on top of appearances for Bradley Garmston and Baily Cargill, the Gills also banked £10,000 for their 2-0 win.

The Gills were also able to end a run of nine games without a win and 28 games without a clean sheet.

Edinburgh said: “It doesn’t matter who we played. Had we lost people would be saying things but we know what we took out of it, we are happy with what we took out of the game and it has done us no harm at all.

“It is very pleasing, regardless of the opposition. I said to the players, it’s a good win and it is pleasing that eventually, after far too long, we’ve managed to keep a clean sheet.

“There are lots of positives. I know you can look at it and say we were expected to win and I understand that but you always look for positives and we had a few.”

With both teams out of the Trophy and only a handful of supporters watching, Edinburgh was delighted with the way his players approached the tie.

He said: “We needed to make sure our mentality was right and approach it in the right manner and I thought the players’ attitude was first class.

“It could have been quite easy to not approach it correctly but they did everything that was asked of them. I thought it was a very accomplished performance, regardless of who the opposition was.”
