Nolberto Solano has emerged as the bookies early favourite to take over permanently from departed Gills boss Ady Pennock.

The Peruvian is currently working as a coach for the national side, as they attempt to qualify for the World Cup.

Solano is keen to return to England, in a management capacity, following a successful playing career over here.

Nolberto Solano is the bookies favourite to replace Ady Pennock at Gills

He spent six years playing for Newcastle and also had spells with Aston Villa, West Ham, Leicester and Hull.

The 42-year-old was a surprise name linked to the job just over a week ago, on the eve of Gills’ match against Charlton.

It has been suggested he could form a coaching team with Ian Hendon, who has previously worked as assistant manager at Gillingham under Andy Hessenthaler.

Time's up for Ady: Boss leaves by 'mutual consent'

In the interim, it is understood that Peter Taylor, the club’s director of football, is overseeing the coaching department, with Steve Lovell and youth boss Mark Patterson looking after things in the wake of Pennock’s departure.

Taylor may even take over on a permanent basis for a third spell. He’s the joint second favourite according to Sky Bet.

Pennock’s assistant Jamie Day has also left the club but the goalkeeper coach Glen Johnson is set to stay.

Gills chairman Paul Scally decided to end Pennock’s reign as head coach on Monday morning, soon after returning from a charity trip to Sri Lanka.

Mr Scally then met the players before training. A further statement is set to be announced later today, confirming the club’s next step.

Bookies are also taking money on former Charlton manager Chris Powell to head up the coaching team at Gillingham.

Manager such as Gareth Ainsworth, at Wycombe, wouldn’t come cheap as their parent club would want compensation, meaning the Gills are likely to explore free agents.

Bet Victor are offering just 12/1 on Justin Edinburgh returning to Priestfield, despite the former boss currently involved in an ongoing settlement dispute with the Gills.
