Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh made the Wright choice for captain at the weekend – and it wasn’t a hard one for him to make.

Josh Wright has excelled this season, becoming an ever-present under Edinburgh.

With skipper Doug Loft and vice-captain John Egan out injured, Wright was the man given the armband during the 2-1 defeat to Chesterfield.

Edinburgh said: “He was excellent and he deserved to have the armband. He is a natural leader.

“Someone else (who could have taken it) would have been Stuart Nelson, who has been captain before for me. But I would always tend to lean towards an outfield player who can lead from example and play an active part on the pitch.”
