Defender Gabriel Zakuani warns League 1 rivals Gillingham will only get better

Gillingham climbed into the top half of the table for the first time this season after Saturday’s win at Scunthorpe.

A 3-1 away win over their high-flying hosts made it three on the bounce for Steve Lovell’s side, who continue to charge up the League 1 table.

Experienced defender Gabriel Zakuani believes there is plenty more to come from the group.

He said: “We are still growing, we are improving and the main thing is that we have so much togetherness at the club and with the potential you just never know.

“We’re ticking off games and at the moment it’s been brilliant, there is so much potential and we are definitely not the finished product yet. Hopefully we can keep winning and see where that takes us.

“I got a nose bleed looking at that table and seeing us up there but we aren’t looking too far ahead.

“We could go up a couple of places with another win but a defeat and we go down. We are still in limbo at the moment but it’s nice to see us in the top half.”

The Gills were second from bottom when Lovell took over but they are now the division’s form team, losing just two of their last 16.

“The belief in the squad right now is unbelievable,” said the defender.

“We went to Scunthorpe with no fear. We worried about ourselves and that has been the key, we have worried about our own game and how we can hurt them, rather than worrying how they can hurt us.”

The Gills have already picked up more points away from home this season than in the whole of their previous campaign, winning seven times since Lovell took over.

Zakuani sad: “There is a lot of freedom (away from home), especially with the attacking players.

“We have been solid all season but I think we have shown a lot more creativity going forward, it’s catching teams off guard.

“When you play away, teams will always have a spell, you just have to ride the storm and put our bodies on the line, Saturday’s game was no different.

“We were buzzing afterwards, just like all the other games where we have come away after picking up three points.”
