Gillingham’s game at Tonbridge Angels will go ahead as planned today.

The occasion will be turned into a day of remembrance following the death of trialist Junior Dian.

Twenty-four-year-old Dian collapsed during Angels’ friendly game at Whyteleafe on Tuesday night.

Angels boss Steve McKimm said: “I’ve had a chat with the chairman and the board and we’ve come to the decision that the Gillingham game will go ahead.

“We’re going to make it a day of remembrance for him.

“Flowers can be laid by people who were there or other well-wishers. Nothing can bring Junior back but he won’t ever be forgotten by us.”

Dian collapsed on the pitch at Whyteleafe’s Church Road ground, shortly after coming on as a second half substitute.

Medical staff from both teams attended the former Dagenham & Redbridge youth player following his collapse. He was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting but doctors were unable to save his life.

“It’s going to be hard for the players especially because they saw what unfolded but it’s our job to help them,” said McKimm,

who earlier spoke of his own distress

“We’ll organise counselling for the players and I would even offer that to the supporters who were there.”
