Anglers fly the flag for Kent

A trio of anglers have been waving the Kent flag with great success as part of the England team at the European Species Championships in Belgium.

Gary Galbraith, from Medway, was declared the winner after two days fishing involving 83 competitors off 15 boats using ragworm, lugworm and frozen lugworm to attract sizeable flatfish.

Mike Smith, also from Medway, took third place and the duo were both winners on their respective boats.

Additionally, Galbraith and Smith won the Two-Man Team award and then, combined with Matt Osborne from Cobham and England teammate Martin Bobbett, they won the Four-Man Team award.

The Belgian A team took the main award, with England’s A and B teams finishing second and third.

Galbraith and Smith were in the A team while Osborne, in his first ever international, came a creditable 16th to help the B team onto the podium.
