Gillingham’s defensive rebuild hasn’t finished yet.
Head coach Ady Pennock would still like to sign another central defender, ideally before the League 1 opener against Doncaster on Saturday.
A new-look back-line will kick off the campaign under Pennock, who has been busy over the summer trying to reshape a side who conceded more goals than anyone else in League 1.
Max Ehmer and Bradley Garmston are the only defenders left from last season’s squad.
An injury to new signing Alex Lacey has kept him out for most of pre-season and he’s unlikely to be fit or the weekend. But regardless of his availability, Pennock is still on the hunt.
“We are always looking,” said Pennock, who fielded two teams over the weekend as Gillingham’s pre-season campaign came to an end in Essex.
“With or without Alex’s injury I think we need another one there because it gives more competition.
“Personally I think we are lacking there, maybe another centre-half.
“We have been working on that the last few weeks, but it has to be right.
“If we can get one more in then fantastic. The chairman has done really well for us and I just hope he does even better in the next week or two.”
Charlton defender Harry Lennon is one player Pennock admits he likes the look of.
The 22-year-old has twice spent time on loan at Gillingham and it is understood he is available. Lennon has been linked with a permanent move back to Priestfield.
Commenting on the speculation, Pennock said: “I like Harry as a player, I really do, he is a young lad, but nothing has come from our end. You do get rumours but nothing our end.”
