Gillingham will meet Reading in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
The draw for the opening round of the League Cup - now sponsored by the Thai energy drink company Carabao - was made on Friday in Bangkok.
Reading finished third in the Championship last season but missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing the play-off final to Huddersfield.
It was the hardest possible tie available to the Gills at this stage as relegated Hull City and Middlesbrough are not involved at this stage, along with the Premier League teams who aren’t in European competition.
Gills reached the third round of the competition last season before losing to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
Fixtures for the new Football League season will be announced on Wednesday, June 21 and the 2017/18 campaign gets under way on Saturday, August 5.
