Lordswood concede late equaliser against Kennington as they battle relegation in the Southern Counties East Premier Division – Games against Whitstable Town and Faversham await

Lordswood’s survival hopes suffered a stoppage-time blow at the weekend but the battle goes on.

The Medway side have three games left to pull off a great escape, and their next two fixtures don’t get much tougher.

FA Vase finalists Whitstable head to the Wood on Thursday night before Scott Porter’s men travel to Faversham Town on Monday.

Porter’s men looked on course for a much-needed three points last Saturday but conceded a 94th-minute equaliser against Kennington, the second time they’d thrown away a lead in the game.

It’s a habit that’s proved costly even before Porter picked up the baton four games ago.

Porter said: “We had the opportunity to see the game out, and we didn't do it. I'm afraid that's been the story of the season for Lordswood.

“I think that's 10 games been in winning positions and not winning, so it's not a sudden thing. It's a regular thing and that one hurt on Saturday.

“You think you're over the line with a win, and then you get sucker-punched. It’s people lacking the concentration and not seeing out the job in the way that I expect my sides to do. When we go in front, I don't expect to lose.”

That draw followed a goalless game away to Sutton Athletic last Wednesday.

Alfie Humphrey had put Lordswood ahead late in the first half at Martyn Grove before ‘Ton equalised on the hour. A straight red card for Ashley Sains didn’t help their cause, his dismissal for retaliation coming shortly before Kennington’s goal.

Charlie Plummer restored the lead for Porter’s side but Kimsley Gatakata popped up with a second for the visitors at the death.

Porter said: “We should have won that game against Sutton but their keeper’s had an absolute worldy and then we should have won on Saturday. They had two shots from 20 yards and scored two goals.

“We hit the post. Keeper’s made a good save. That was a hard one to take Saturday but we're still there with three games to go.”

Looking at the challenge ahead, Porter continued.

He said: “I'm not bothered who the opposition are, where they are or what they're doing. I'm not fussed about that. It's what we've got to do in this league.

“As I well know, any team can beat anyone, regardless of where they are in the league. That's what we've got to go with.

“We're going to keep going and give everything we possibly can until it's mathematically done. We've got to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down.

“It was a tough one to take but we've got three games to go and we'll give it our best shot.”

Porter was shown a red card himself late in the match after two yellow cards.

Speaking about the red cards in the match to the club’s media, he said: “You can’t talk to referees these days. I never swore, I just asked him a couple of questions. They can’t deal with it. If they want respect it has to be both ways.”

On Sains’ dismissal he added: “ It affected the game, he apologised to the boys but that was too late for me, as club captain he should act in a better manner.”

Porter watched his old team Whitstable in their Kent Senior Trophy final against Larkfield & New Hythe on Sunday, which they lost 3-2.

The Oystermen are playing catchup in the league following their run to the FA Vase final, which takes place at Wembley on May 11. Before then they’ll be hoping to secure a play-off place in the Southern Counties East Premier Division.

Porter said: “They had a game on Tuesday, another one this Thursday against us and then Saturday and Monday but we just have to worry about what we do. It’s a winnable game.

“We’re not out of it and we’ll keep going.

“We’ll relish the next two games. I expect there is going to be a massive crowd at Faversham.

“We are coming up against two big teams next and we will just give it everything we possibly have got.

“I've lost one game in four. The first game was always going to be tough without any real preparation but you can see the progress. We are running out of time but the boys have shown a lot of fight and I can’t fault that, it is just decision making and finishing teams off.”

Porter has made a couple of additions. Josh Oliver is unavailable to face his parent team because of a previous agreement as part of his loan move from Whitstable. Sains is set for a ban.

Experienced pair Ben Brown and Rob Gillman have been added to the ranks.
