The ever-popular Medway Messenger Mini Youth Games got under way this year with the boys’ football tournament.

Held at the Kicks Soccer Centre in Strood last Thursday, more than 250 children representing 36 primary schools took part in groups stages and a last 16 knock-out.

The boys from Fairview Primary School in Gillingham took top honours from Kings School, Rochester, in second and Featherby Junior School, Gillingham, in third.

The Mini Youth Games is a multi-sport programme of events running throughout the school year and it is open to all Medway schools.

Organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team, the competition’s focus is on good sportsmanship and the tournament’s football fair play award went to Horsted Junior School, Chatham.

The next Mini Youth Games event is the hockey tournament on Wednesday at Holcombe HC.
