Gillingham are preparing for action this weekend – even if the weather looks set to put the game in doubt.
The Priestfield pitch is under cover but snow and freezing temperatures hit Gillingham this week, with weather warnings in place for Friday.
Indoor training facilities were booked for Thursday and tomorrow and manager Steve Lovell is preparing his side for the visit of Rotherham, regardless of the conditions.
Lovell said: “The forecast isn’t great but hopefully it will change. We just have to plan as if it is on. There is always the chance it could be in doubt but we will just prepare as normal.
“We have an indoor and an outdoor place where we can train if need be, so we have facilities that we can use. It is not ideal but there is nothing you can do, you can’t do anything about the weather.”
The Gills were hoping to give some of their fringe players a run-out against a Luton Town XI on Tuesday, but that game was called off.
Lovell’s team have been allowed extra rest this week, following a double header on the road, with a midweek trip to Shrewsbury coming before last weekend’s game at Bury.
He said: “The boys have had a lot of games and a lot of travelling and if anything this is a good week to have a low week, because of the travelling and games we’ve had.”
Gillingham’s game at Bury ended in defeat, thanks in part to a poor first half but the manager isn’t about to make wholesale changes because of one bad 45 minutes.
He said: “Sometimes you can change personnel and it doesn’t quite work and we have to be mindful of that. We could tinker with it, maybe bringing someone back in or leave someone out for tactical reasons.
“Whoever plays or is left out, it is done for a reason, not because they haven’t been doing it or working hard.
“Whoever we start with, things change during the game, we might need to change things and it is important that we have back up and a Plan B, which we have always had. That is something we will work on this week.”
