Gillingham didn’t have much time to celebrate their memorable win over Watford on Tuesday night.
Goalscorer Mark Byrne insisted the players were already turning their attention to the weekend, and a trip to Shrewsbury, soon after beating Premier League Watford in the EFL Cup second round.
Byrne got Gillingham back into the match with an equaliser before Bradley Dack won it in extra-time.
Asked if it meant the champagne was being popped, the 27-year-old said: “No, no. We have an away trip on Saturday, another long trip and another game Tuesday, so there are lots of games coming up.”
Gillingham’s players were back in the club the following morning for a warm-down and will travel to Shrewsbury on Friday as they look to get their League 1 form back on
track.
Byrne’s first Gillingham goal will live long in the memory, curling a shot past Watford’s Costel Pantilimon, leaving the keeper stranded.
Midfielder Byrne has scored some special goals in the past and his effort on Tuesday was another.
He said: “As I cut inside I hit a clean strike with my left foot and I don’t really do tap-ins. It was a great goal for me.
“That is probably one of the best wins in my career. Not many teams go to a Premier League team, away from home, and get a result.”
