Gillingham won’t be thinking of their holidays just yet says midfielder Mark Byrne.
The Gills are heading for a relatively stress free final few weeks of the season, clear of the relegation battle below and seemingly with too much to do to make a promotion challenge.
Byrne, speaking after a second successive defeat, on Thursday, said: “It will be a big ask to make the play-offs and we just have to get as many points as we can on the board and finish as high as we can.
“There is no better feeling than winning games, we can't step off it, we have to keep going.
“Considering where we were at the start of the season, people wrote us off, but since the gaffer came in we have done really well and he has been happy with the way we have been playing. We have progressed a lot since he has taken over and we just have to keep going to the end of season now.
“I don't think anybody is going to be slacking off now or going into holiday mode.”
Gillingham lost Thursday’s match at home to MK Dons, that defeat coming after a loss at Bradford, but Byrne thought both were harsh on the team.
He said: “We are disappointed (on Thursday) because we dominated the game and we were the only team that looked like winning. A poor decision went against us for the first goal (Gills claimed there was a handball in the build up).
“We got back into the game and we were trying to finish it off (with a winner) but it just didn't come. It was disappointing that we didn't get something from the game.
“We've dominated the last two games and it's just that killer instinct to finish teams off which we were doing a couple of weeks ago. it's disappointing but we have to dust ourselves down.
