Robert Caswell’s Southern Area title fight has been a long time coming.

The 23-year-old finally gets to meet Michael Webber-Kane in the ring on Saturday night - over four months after they were originally meant to meet.

Caswell (8-0) and Webber-Kane (11-0) will put their unbeaten records on the line for a chance to win the super featherweight area title and in doing so open doors for much bigger things.

A meeting in October was scrapped after Caswell suffered a perforated eardrum while taking part in his last sparring session of his training camp. Fake injury claims were laughed off by Caswell and a new date quickly agreed.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said the Chatham boxer.

“I feel like it’s been scheduled for a year! I am glad it’s here now. I have felt good in sparring, my last spar was last week and I’m all good.

“It’s billed as a 50-50 fight with a title on the line and this has always been the plan from the start when I turned pro. I always wanted to get to 10-0 and box for the Southern Area first and that is what is happening.

“I have done it a bit quicker than expected but I am happy. I have done 90 rounds of sparring in six weeks and I feel 100% ready.”

Caswell last fought in early September, enjoying a 60-54 points win over Honduran boxer Jayro Fernando Duran while his weekend opponent managed a four-round contest in December against Santiago Garces which also ended in a sound victory on points.

Most of his sparring ahead of this match was with Norwegian Bernard Angelo Torres prior to his IBF and WBO inter-continental featherweight title fight against Bruce Carrington at Madison Square Garden, a bout the American won by TKO in some style.

Caswell might need to go the distance this Saturday in a scheduled 10-round contest and although he’s only ever done six before as a pro, he’s well prepared for the extra rounds.

He said: “I have had a lot of rounds in sparring with world- class fighters and it worked out well with Bernard coming over here to finish his own camp. The max I have done so far is six rounds but I can have a look at the first couple of rounds and warm into it and I am better as the fight goes on.

“I think I have got the power to stop him but if not then on points, either or. You are never sure until you do it as I haven’t done 10 rounds in a fight before but I have had 10-12 rounds sparring with two different people jumping in and out.”

A win for Caswell this Saturday would be the ideal start to his boxing year.

He added: “Once I get this one out of the way I have got the whole year ahead of me to have a real big year, four fights under my belt and then go from there.

“Four big fights this year, title-fights, 10-rounders, that would be the plan.

“All of the big opportunities will start to open up, TV opportunities, everyone will know who I am with a belt. Win this and then I have options, to try and defend it or move onto the English and then the British, that’s the goal.”

Chatham Town Football Club have put together a ticket and coach travel package for fans who want to watch. The bus leaves from outside their ground at 5.30pm, following the game against Billericay Town.

Boxing on the same show is Rochester’s Louise Orton in what will be her third pro fight after winning her previous two on points.

Orton’s last win came in November, with a dominant performance against Bojana Libiszewska at the same York Hall venue as she fights at this weekend. She’s up against an opponent from Nicaragua.
