Gillingham are being linked with a move for promising Celtic youngster Scott Robertson.
Reports north of the border say the Gills are keen on a loan move for the 19-year-old midfielder who has just agreed a new three-year deal with the Glasgow giants.
The Daily Record say Gills boss Steve Evans is a fan of the player and that Celtic may want to loan him out due to being top-heavy in the midfield department.
Robertson has been involved with Celtic’s first team squad but match action has been limited.
He’s played in the Scottish League Challenge Cup for Celtic on a handful of occasions and impressed in their Europa League fixture against Romainian side CFR Cluj last season.
Robertson has been at Celtic for some time, progressing through the academy ranks before turning pro.
It’s not the first time Evans - a Celtic fan and proud Glaswegian - has been linked to one of the club’s youngsters. Last season the Gills were said to have made a move for Karamoko Dembele, who was then 16.
Gillingham are certainly in the market for more additions, with Evans saying they could be looking to bring three or four more players in to add to their slender squad. They have 18 senior players on the books but that includes the likes of Henry Woods and Joe Walsh, who might be heading out on loan.
Evans would like to bring the squad number up to 20, at least, and does have the opportunity to bring three more loans into his matchday squad.
Assistant manager Paul Raynor was on press duty after the Gills’ game against Crawley Town in the EFL Trophy and was asked about the Robertson link.
He said: “I can’t confirm or deny anything but I know the gaffer and the chairman are working incredibly hard.
“We are still a little thin on the ground in terms of numbers.
“Hopefully young Zech Medley won’t be our for the weekend (after limping off on Tuesday). He had a little tight calf.
“We are tight on numbers but I am sure if the gaffer can be persuasive and get the chairman to put his hand in his pocket then I am sure he will help. We are still looking to add.”
Gillingham are in need of extra options upfront with Brandon Hanlan yet to agree a new deal. He’s not been involved in the last two cup games and won’t feature unless he signs a contract.
Raynor said: “We are obviously still trying to get to the bottom of the Brandon Hanlan situation. Is he staying, is he going, where is ge going? We don’t know.
“Hopefully that will be resolved soon so we know where we are at. We start the league on Saturday and I am sure Brandon wants to be playing football.
“We hope it is here but if it is not then he needs to get his future sorted and we can move on. That is still in Brandon’s hands at the moment.”
