Gillingham are among the clubs interested in signing Charlton striker Jayden Stockley - according to reports.
Addicks manager Dean Holden - appointed last month - may be willing to let the front-man go if they can get in a striker themselves this month.
The South London Press report of “significant interest” in the 29-year-old, from clubs in League 1, overseas and from Priestfield.
The Gills are shopping in a different market now they have American Brad Galinson running the club and Stockley would be an eye-catching signing. He scored 20 goals last season and until recently wore the captain’s armband at Charlton. That’s no longer the case under Holden.
Gillingham tried to sign Stockley two years ago, under former boss Steve Evans. Charlton landed the forward on loan from Preston and turned that into a permanent deal under their old manager Nigel Adkins.
At the time, Evans said: “When Preston announced they were letting him out on loan I don’t think there was a club in League 1 who didn’t want him. We certainly wanted him.”
Evans said they were unable to get anywhere near to landing the striker because of the money needed. Things have now changed with Mr Galinson heading up operations at Priestfield.
Stockley started out at Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth and had numerous loan spells before a season in Scotland with Aberdeen. Exeter paid a reported £100,000 for him a year later, where he was prolific, earning a move to Preston for £750,000. A successful loan move south to Charlton was followed by a permanent deal in June 2021, signing on a three-year deal.
He’s been involved in most games for the Addicks this season but has rarely completed the match. Not since playing Lincoln City on October 8 has he played the 90 minutes, coming on as a late substitute in the last two. He’s got three goals in 28 appearances this season. A move could rekindle his scoring form.
