Chatham Town Women play their final game of 2024 with revenge on their minds when they take on Actonians this Sunday.
Their year ends with a promotion battle at the Bauvill Stadium as Keith Boanas’ second-placed Chatham take on an Actonian side sitting just below them on goal difference. National League Division 1 South East league leaders Real Bedford are a point better off.
Chats have already lost twice to Actonians by 1-0 scorelines, at home in the FA WNL Plate first round at the end of September and when they met in the league for the reverse fixture in August.
Boanas felt they were hard done by in both previous matches and would love to get one over them this Sunday. Actonians head into the match after a shock 5-1 loss at home to Cambridge United, a scoreline that moved Chats above them in the league on goal difference.
Boanas said: “It was a shock result but we know what they're about and we should beat them anyway. We've just got to make sure we do a job on them Sunday.
“The two 1-0 results of both games, we know we should have scored in, and shouldn’t have conceded from probably the only chances they had in both games. If the players haven't learned from that, then I would be concerned about their learning capacity.
“Sunday's massive now and on paper we could go top of the league.
“The biggest thing for us is to get our own back on them, they have done us twice, in the cup and the league, so it's a little bit of a revenge mission and something we want to put straight.”
Actonians have now lost two in a row, suffering a 1-0 defeat against leaders Real Bedford prior to last weekend’s heavy loss.
Chatham’s away game against AFC Sudbury was postponed on Sunday due to the poor weather conditions.
They won their previous league game 3-1, away to London Seaward the week before. Boanas was delighted with the win, responding well to a frustrating FA Women’s Cup exit prior to that, losing 3-2 away to London Bees.
Aside from the FA Cup loss, Chats have been in great form, winning their last five league games. Their only league defeat to date has come against Actonians.
Boanas said: “We've responded to everything, performances haven’t always been where I would want them to be but we have been grinding out results and nicking them where we needed to.
“We responded okay to the FA Cup game which was a really hard one to get over. I know Kevin (Hake, the chairman) was really disappointed, as am I. We knew we shouldn’t have gone out but we have had to re-focus and go for what we have left, which is obviously the league title and we’re still in three other minor cup competitions.”
Chatham beat Dulwich Hamlet to make it to the semi-finals of the Isthmian League Cup earlier this month and they beat Dartford in the first round of the Combined Counties Cup. The will play away to London City Lionesses under-21s in the DFDS Kent Women’s Cup on January 19.
