Baily Cargill made his long-awaited Gillingham debut in the week and will now add much-needed competition to the team’s defence.
No side have conceded more goals than the Gills in League 1 and boss Justin Edinburgh is looking forward to having the Bournemouth loanee pushing for a start.
Cargill was signed over two months ago but has only just been given the green light to get back into action, playing in Tuesday's 2-0 win over West Brom.
Edinburgh said: “He certainly comes into contention to start on Saturday. His performance was good. We’re not getting carried away but he looked assured and he felt he could have played longer, so that’s always a positive."
Youngster Darren Oldaker, meanwhile, is pressing to reclaim his place in midfield after an impressive midweek performance was capped by a stunning long-range strike.
Edinburgh said: “That was a fantastic finish and he was outstanding in the first half.
“He dictated the play and his use of the ball was excellent, his tenacity without the ball was great.”
Young striker Greg Cundle, who made his debut at West Brom, is another fighting for his chance after being recalled from a loan spell at Billericay.
“He’s got more confident with playing at different levels," said Edinburgh. "There is a lot of work to do but I have certainly seen a lot of improvement and I like what I see.”
