It’s the penultimate weekend of the regular league season for Invicta Dynamos with another two intriguing battles ahead.
First up, at home on Saturday, are second-placed Solent Devils, a side the Mos defeated 10-6 on aggregate over two legs in the Southern Cup Semi-Finals. On Sunday, Invicta head to Oxford City Stars - a team who thumped them 7-2 last time out.
While third place in the NIHL South Division 1 is up for grabs, Mos coach Karl Lennon is keen to focus on the games at hand.
Lennon said: “There might have been a habit on our part to really chase that number we wanted to place in the league. When you focus on what you want and not what is at hand, then you don’t always get that.
“We tackled each game as they came (during the last weekend of action). We have to do the same with Solent on Saturday, complete focus on them and then what they bring to the table.
“We beat them at home the last time we played them in the cup Semi-Final second leg, we have some confidence from that, but they beat us the time before when we played them in our rink.
“It is a difficult challenge, they are very organised and well structured and have been together for some time so they know how each other plays. We know what we have, what threats we carry to a team like that and we will be looking for more of the same from the last time we played them.”
Lennon’s men had a night to forget last time they went to Oxford. The City Stars were strong on the night and the Mos will be keen to boss it this time around.
Lennon said: “They were excellent and we let them dominate us, which was the most disappointing aspect, but it was a lesson.
“Preparation has to be better than what it was last time, the focus has to be better.
“We know on our day we can beat them, there is no question, we have done it three times already. They have beaten us twice now, they could level the mini-series and we could win it comfortably if our hopes go to plan, we have to have the right attitude.
“There is a lot at stake for us, a good position in the league could be dependent on a result there, ultimately we have to be absolutely focused on the task at hand and get the job done.”
With no action during the last weekend, it gave an opportunity for some to shake off niggles.
Lennon was hoping to welcome Tom Long back to action after missing the last three games.
The coach said: “Missing him was a pain because he has been such a valuable asset to the team throughout the course of the season and alongside our imports he is the most experienced player we have on the roster.
“When you lose someone like that from your dressing room it does have an impact because he keeps people honest and he is a hard worker, he holds people accountable and when that is not around in the room you can sometimes miss.
“We do have enough quality around him that has stepped in to get the job done, like last Sunday but he is a big miss, a great character as well and we hope to have him back.”
