Cody McDonald insists he had nothing to prove last Saturday.
The Gills striker took his goal-tally for the season to 12 after scoring a penalty against his former club.
That goal put Gillingham 2-1 ahead, having trailed 1-0, in a game they eventually won 3-1.
“The lads showed great character towards the end,” said the frontman, whose goal came in the 88th minute.
“People might have started to get a bit nervous and so did we but we kept going and thoroughly deserved three points in the end.
“I didn’t feel like I had a point to prove but it is always nice to score a goal against your old team. It was an important goal at the time as well and that made it even better. The main thing was we got the three points.”
McDonald spent two seasons at Coventry before the Gills signed him permanently in the summer of 2013.
It was their current boss Steven Pressley who let McDonald leave but the striker holds no grudges.
“That was for him,” joked the striker.
“He is a good man. I have got a lot of time for him. He had to make a decision and at the time he was going to go with one up top and he didn’t think that was my game.
“I left on good terms. That’s football, it happens and you have to get on with it.”
McDonald's former club are now just a point and a place above the Gills.
"There are some good players there and I am sure they will come good," said the former Coventry striker.
"We played them twice last year and they were really good. We beat them 4-2 here but they were down to 10 men early on.
"When we played them at Northampton last year they were such a good team and created so many chances. I dont know if it is a lack of confidence at the moment."
