A permanent deal could be on the table for John Marquis if his current form continues.

New boss Justin Edinburgh likes what he sees in the 22-year-old frontman.

Marquis’ 79th-minute strike won the points for the Gills at Peterborough on Tuesday night and made it a winning start at the club for Edinburgh.

The manager said: “He has come in and settled with the group and he dispatched his goal well.

“He is with us on loan until the end of the season but I think John has said himself he hasn’t got a future at Millwall.

“We have got him in our camp at the moment and if he continues to do that, then I am sure we will be looking to take the position with John on longer with the football club.”

Marquis initially joined the Gills from Millwall for a month but the Championship side agreed to extend that until the end of the season.

He has played six games since joining on loan and scored four goals, losing just once.
