Invicta Dynamos coach Karl Lennon is keen to put Sunday’s big defeat behind them - with an exciting weekend ahead.

The Mos lost 11-2 at home against league champions Streatham and Lennon admitted some of his players may have had their focus elsewhere, with a Southern Cup final on the horizon.

Lennon said: “It was one of those days where eyes were probably on the prize the following week and not necessarily focused on the task at hand.

“We had a really good week of training, preparation seemed good, boys seemed confident, we started very well, scored the first goal, had a lot of energy to take from that but then just didn’t deal very well with their fightback.

“They are a very good team, they had lost the week before so they had some demons to exorcise and we caught the brunt of it.

"I was very disappointed with the performance, the boys didn’t do themselves justice. If they think that is going to be good enough this weekend, it’s not, and we have to be quick to put it behind us, move forward. Today’s a new day and we start the preparation for this massive weekend coming up.”

A two-legged Southern Cup final takes place this weekend against Chelmsford Chieftains. The Essex side travel to Gillingham on Saturday before the second leg at The Riverside on Sunday.

It’s the first of two double-headers against the Essex side. Once the cup contest is over, the two teams will be then trading blows in the play-offs the following week.

“We should have performed much better (on Sunday),” Lennon said. “But it is hard to know how many of the players were completely focused on the task at hand or whether they were concerned about making the fixture the following week, in terms of injuries and so on.

“We missed a few bodies as well, we had five who didn’t ice, through injury, illness or unavailability, which isn’t ideal in terms of our strength in depth going up against a team like that but that is no excuse, they were better than us on the night and deserved to win, we have to put our hands up to that.”

The Mos ended the season sitting fourth - equal on points with the third placed team - an improvement on sixth last season.

Lennon will be hoping to build on that with some more consistent performances in future as they look to improve.

He said: “We finished level on points with third place so in that regard of course we are happy because across the season that was one of our objectives, to place as high as we can and we did that.

“For me now, something that might not be for this season, but we need to eradicate the inconsistency in performances, we need to be more consistent, week on week, we can’t be too high and low, we need to be somewhere in the middle. The big teams grind out results when they aren’t playing well and make things happen and really put people to the sword when they need to.

“We need to be more ruthless when we play hockey, on Sunday we were far from ruthless, we were quite timid in that regard.”
